Getting it Right – Running Shoes that Work

Serious runners know that their shoe is the most important piece of gear. It’s almost impossible to know where to start with running shoes because there are thousands to choose from. Yes, it would be wonderful to purchase a shoe that is not only comfortable, but you can use for 200 miles without costing a king’s ransom. Your jogging shoe doesn’t need to break the bank. Good running shoes fit well.

It’s a fact, your running shoes are your most expensive gear – like toddlers thinking of their Razor Kiddie Kick Scooter. Your pinkies will be protected and your stride will probably improve with good shoes. There is no bigger sports market and the better jogging shoe manufacturers put tons of money into the technology and science of running shoes.

Ask 10 runners and get 10 answers, but I believe the best are…… ASICS, Brooks and Pumas. I am happy with these brands I mention much like I am with my Razor A2 Scooter. The Brooks and ASICS will come with great ankle support and they will feel soft. No cushion with the Puma, unfortunately. The Puma though, is not heavy at all and comfy on your feet. My recommendation is the Brooks, or Asics. But it all depends on what kind of shoe fits you best and is most comfortable.  I have never come across a bad pair of Brooks or Asics. It may be difficult, but it’s well worth it to find what fits best on your foot.

With shoes, you really do get what you pay for, so buy smartly. For beginners, there is nothing like getting started on the wrong foot. Avoid beginning on a bad note and wearing the wrong type of shoes. Don’t worry about getting something extravagant, start good and protect your feet.

Start with a running store, many you can find near you online by Googling running shoes and tell them exactly how you run. The salesperson should check out the shape and arch of your foot. This measurement will determine what shoe type you will wear like a tyke on a Razor Kiddie Kick. This measurement is very important to find the best running shoe.

You need to know what type of foot you have in order to choose a shoe that correctly supports your particular foot type. There are a few different running shoes: straight, curved, and semi-curved. Dunk your bare foot in water, then stand on a surface where you can see the imprint of your foot. See the imprint? Now you know what type of arch you have – flat or high or normal.

Shoeless is the new fad in some running circles but not everyone is on board as of yet. This has runners shucking off their high-tech trainers in favor of naked feet — or minimalist footwear like Newton All-Weather Trainer, the Nike Free and the glove-like Vibram FiveFingers.

And who said that shoes prevent injuries anyway?  Do they really?  They really haven’t done anything since they were invented. And studies exist showing running shoes might even increase the incidence of ankle sprains and other running injuries. One of the strangest facts is that cheap shoes actually cause more injuries than expensive ones.
